In the frame: Photographers struggle to take photos in public

Published: Sep 29, 2010 23:18 Updated: Sep 29, 2010 23:22

It’s hard to be a Saudi photographer, thanks to problems that arise when police or citizens raise objections to raising the camera. Even people trying to take pictures of their family and friends in public face these problems.

Oday Abid, a Saudi freelance photographer, says the authorities and members of the public are his greatest concern when taking pictures.

“Many of them become emotional and try to stop us, even forcibly,” he said.

The only secure way to take pictures in peace here is to ensure you aren’t pointing the camera at people or at sensitive assets, like government buildings or housing compounds.

“I usually avoid taking pictures in public or in places packed with people because people are always suspicious thinking that I might take pictures of them,” said Saudi photographer Dhahi Al-Ali.

Saudis are famously adverse to being photographed, particularly photographing family members and especially photographing women. The reasons behind this are complicated and linked to Saudi culture and family reputation. In the age of the Internet exhibition, the aversion has become stronger: The fear that a woman’s picture could end up online to sully the reputation of her and her family is strong enough that photos have been used by men for sexual blackmail, something the religious police grapple with constantly. Under Saudi law, anyone being photographed — even in a crowded public place — retains the right to object to being photographed.

In addition to the cultural fears and privacy concerns of photographing people in public, Saudi law explicitly states that certain buildings may not be photographed, citing security concerns. In most cases, this includes government buildings and anywhere a “No photographs” sign is posted. But police are known to stop and ask for permits from anyone taking photos of buildings.

“I was shooting in Malik Road one day and four police cars stopped me and asked for legal papers and a permit,” said Abid. “They then explained that I can take pictures anywhere I want expect areas and buildings that belongs to government and houses of people of high authorities.”

But this enforcement seems arbitrary.

Abid continued: “One of my photographer friends went to downtown Jeddah to take pictures of the architecture and the atmosphere of the historic heart of Jeddah, but unfortunately he was stopped by a policeman from taking pictures saying that photographers were portraying Jeddah in a bad way.”

Photographer Bakri Omar said while public photography is not explicitly prohibited the culture still feels very adversely to it, “and policemen are mixing law and tradition, so they keep stopping photographers from doing their job.”

With such pressure on taking pictures in public, many local photographers are forced to take their projects underground and shifting their style from artistic realism to photo manipulation.

“I usually take indoor pictures and use computer programs (such as Photoshop) to place backgrounds just to avoid explaining to people on the streets that I’m just photographing the outdoor features.”

Taking pictures in restaurants and shopping centers is also forbidden.

“I was assigned to take photos of Jeddah shopping centers for my school project back when I was in college, but when I tried to do it a security guard came up to me and asked me to put down my camera and stop taking pictures claiming it’s against the law,” said photographer Salma Enani. “When I tried to argue with him that photos of government buildings are the only ones prohibited not random shopping centers, he insisted that I put it down or he would take it away from me.”

Being nice to the people and explaining to them how photography works help assay concerns by subjects, according to Mokhtar Chahine.

“I was once waiting for hours to take a decent picture of the sunset on the Jeddah Conriche and when it finally started to set and the sky turned purple I started shooting. An old Saudi man came to me and angrily asked me what was I doing. I mean, isn’t it obvious?” said Chahine. “Of course I had to explain why I was taking those pictures and the purpose of them and he finally understood what I was doing and that I was not taking pictures of the women sitting with him. I think people understand if we speak to them and explain everything to them. Having the right attitude and not being rude really helps our people understand that photography is just an art not a harm.”

But until the society comes to terms with the art of public photography, Saudi Arabia will continue to be one of the more challenging countries for photographers outside of war zones.

Stylish and Colorful Illustrations by Evgeny Kiselev

Saint-Petersburg based Russian illustrator Evgeny Kiselev never stops and draws everywhere he goes. No matter that is in a tube station or snorkeling in Asia, he always finds inspiration from enjoying life. He started freelance work a few years ago after being squeezed in local creative agencies where he got professional experience. The lack of academic background hadn’t changed the way he creates and even improved the will to tie his life with graphics and visualization.

So what you think makes Evgeny’s artworks outstanding? I do believe he found a unique way of creativity flow and concentrates on researching new ways of inspiration. His works are recognizable and he rarely uses the previous ideas while generating new diversities. Since last year he started to materialize illustrations on cushions and umbrellas what makes them unique and colorful.

“The diverse work of Evgeny Kiselev oscillates between the rigors of symmetry and prolific excess. Several compositions begin with vivid tiled patterns that are mirrored again and again until they can no longer be contained and are forced to push beyond the confines of their logic. Others, emerge from a single outline that manifests the controlled lawlessness of the work. Each piece achieves a complexity of color and layer that continues to build infinitely into the space of the page creating a warping spatial depth”

Since I’ve been watching for his artistic career he has collaborated with European media like ROJO, Computer Arts, Miller, IDN, Grafik Magazine and of course Designcollector participating in our six anniversary.

10 Animes For People Who Hate Anime

10 Animes For People Who Hate Anime

Japanese animation is riddled with recycled and bizarre tropes. It’s for this reason that a majority of Westerners are turned off by the medium due to the repetitive situations and formulas reused time and again. Despite this, there’s a good deal of anime out there that defy the rather annoying archetypes we’ve grown to despise. These new classics are the things that cult hits are made of, and without much further ado, we present to you our list of anime for those that hate the medium.

Critics have often cited this movie as the progenitor for commencing America’s love affair with Japanese animation. Not surprisingly, it lives up to its hype. Thankfully, it avoids deforming the proportions of it’s characters and presents a storyline particular to Japan. The social direst is reminiscent of the student protests back during 60s in the wake of a post-war Japan. In the end, it did something different that was unique to Japan and it’s doubtful that American live action will successfully recreate it and make it creatively its own.

Ghost in the Shell

This movie from the 90s offered a deep meditation on post-humanism and identity in the wake of technology’s rise. What’s more, the Wachowski brothers cited this film as one of its chief inspirations for the Matrix. Its successors are no exception and do the first film justice. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence furthers its philosophical discourse on what it means to be human in a post-human world. At the same time, the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series extrapolates the anxieties of living in the information age. This is cyberpunk at its finest.

Samurai Champloo

The pioneer of synthesizing the Hip Hop aesthetic with anime and paved the way for other emulations like Tokyo Tribe2 and Afro Samurai. What’s notable about this anime is that it brushes upon issues historically exceptional to Japan rather than just simply borrowing an exploiting American Hip Hop wholesale. It features the marginalized groups like Japanese Christians, the Ainu, Ryukyuans, Proto-Gaijin Japanophiles, courtesans, ronin, and other individuals. While the first episode openly claims to not be historically accurate, the ironic part is that it’s closer to reality than some of the other shows that make hurdles to romanticize the age of the samurai.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Mamoru Oshii–the director of this movie based on his magnum opus, The Kereberos Saga–is a prominent figure in anime, having earned the admiration of James Cameron and the Wachowski Brothers to name a few. He envisions and alternate history of Japan in which America remained neutral throughout the 2nd World War. As a result, Japan became occupied by a Nazi Germany and remained an authoritarian police state. Fuse, a member of an elite unit, is confronted with his own humanity when he refuses to gun down a child terrorist. His romance with a woman formerly of a terrorist cell culminates in one of the most chillingly heart wrenching endings in cinematic animation.

Neon-Genesis Evangelion

While this show features many of the tropes animephobes abhor, what they ignore is that it turns the archetypes of the genre upside down. Shinji is essentially possesses an isolated personality reflective of his Otaku fan base. Both Asuka and Rei are Mary-Sue characters, but that’s the very point. Asuka psychologically collapses because she’s unable to confront the imperfections in her seemingly perfect persona. As for Rei, she’s merely a vacant doll representative of the empty lust objects in manga literature. As problematic as these archetypes are, the ending in the movies grants a revolutionary solution to the complications of identity in an otherwise bleak Postmodern world.

Grave of the Fireflies

At the forefront for Japan’s current anti-war stance, this film offers an account of the bombings in Kobe near the end of World War II. Both the main character, his sister, and struggle to survive. It offers an alternative glimpse into the World War II experience without a scatter brained school girl in sight.

Serial Experiments Lain

This television show is beyond any definition. It’s narrative is disturbing and fragmented. In terms of its creative vision, it’s comparable to none aside from perhaps Metal Gear Solid 2.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Based on the hit manga and drama, this anime features the exploits of the teacher we all wished we had. Even though it features some of the zany humor endemic to most animes, it still possesses a subtle criticism of Japan’s rigid education system and displays a mildly accurate portrayal of modern Japanese culture, except livelier.

Spirited Away

Hayao Miyazaki has an entire collection of masterpieces beneath his belt. Every one and anyone with a lick of taste considers Miyazaki bearable at the very least and while it’s debatable as to which of his films is the best, but how many have earned an Academy Award?

Ninja Scroll

Possibly one of the most popular anime movies outside of Japan aside from Ghost in the Shell and Akira, this film is pure action gold. While it may not be anything intellectually stimulating, but at the very least it’s free of the more annoying elements of anime and is chock-full of adrenaline while we’re at it.

When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with slabs of meat on my face.

As kids, my brother Eric and I fought like wild animals. He still sports a scar above his lip from a cut I accidentally gave him, and my nose isn’t quite as straight as it might be if I hadn’t taken so many shots to it. We’re as close as can be today, but back in our teen years, we sported many a bruised ego and blackened eye. And the home remedy for the latter? A hunk of steak.

Turns out, a lot of moms don’t have the whole story when it comes to food cures. Cold is good for a bruise, but meat doesn’t do anything more than a bag of ice would. But there are plenty of foods that are effective home remedies for curing everything from pounding headaches to potency issues to procrastination. Take these 25 secret food cures, for instance. Incorporate these wonderfoods into your daily diet, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your body and your mind react.

And best of all? Nobody will laugh and call you “meat head.”

Dark Chocolate
Research shows that dark chocolate can improve heart health, lower blood pressure, reduce LDL cholesterol, and increase the flow of blood to the brain. It also boosts serotonin and endorphin levels, which are associated with improved mood and greater concentration. Look for chocolate that is 60 percent cocoa or higher.

Tuck a few extra cloves into your next stir-fry or pasta sauce: Research has found that enzymes in garlic can help increase the release of serotonin, a neurochemical that makes you feel relaxed.

Caffeinated Coffee
A study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior found that the average metabolic rate of people who drank caffeinated coffee increased 16 percent over those who drank decaf. Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system by increasing your heart rate and breathing. (Want to know what else coffee is good for? Read 25 Best Nutrition Secrets Ever to find out.)

Chile Peppers
It turns out that capsaicin, the compound that gives chile peppers their mouth-searing quality, can also jumpstart your fat-burning, muscle-building engines. According to a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology, eating 1 tablespoon of chopped red or green chiles boosts metabolism by 23 percent.

Fried Eggs
Go ahead, crack under pressure: Eating fried eggs may help reduce high blood pressure. In a test-tube study, scientists in Canada discovered that the breakfast standby produced the highest levels of ACE inhibitory peptides, amino acids that dilate blood vessels and allow blood to flow more easily. (For up-to-the-minute tips like these, be sure to follow me on Twitter here. You can lose weight effortlessly and look, feel and live better than ever!)

When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed at work, reach for the Wrigley’s: Chewing gum can help tame your tension, according to Australian researchers. People who chewed gum while taking multitasking tests experienced a 17 percent drop in self-reported stress. This might have to do with the fact that we associate chewing with positive social interactions, like mealtimes.

Omega-3s may calm your neurotic side, according to a study in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. Researchers found that adults with the lowest blood levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were more likely to have neuroses, which are symptoms for depression. Salmon is loaded with EPA and DHA, as are walnuts, flaxseeds, and even cauliflower.

The probiotics in yogurt may help you drop pounds. British scientists found that these active organisms boost the breakdown of fat molecules in mice, preventing the rodents from gaining weight. Try the Horizon brand of yogurt—it contains the probiotic L. casei, the same organism used in the study.

Grilled Chicken Breast
The protein in lean meat like chicken, fish, or pork loin isn’t just good at squashing hunger and boosting metabolism—it’s also a top source of energy. University of Illinois researchers found that people who ate higher amounts of protein had higher energy levels and didn’t feel as tired as people with proportionally higher amounts of carbs in their diet.

Kidney Beans
These legumes are an excellent source of thiamin and riboflavin. Both vitamins help your body use energy efficiently, so you won’t be nodding off mid-Powerpoint.

Swedish researchers found that if you eat barley—a key ingredient in whole-grain cereals—for breakfast, the fibrous grain cuts blood sugar response by 44 percent at lunch and 14 percent at dinner.

Clams stock your body with magnesium, which is important in metabolism, nerve function, and muscle function. When magnesium levels are low, your body produces more lactic acid—the same fatigue-inducing substance that you feel at the end of a long workout.

Rooibos Tea
Animal research suggests that this South African tea, also known as bush or redbush tea, may provide potent immunity-boosting benefits. In addition, Japanese researchers found that it may help prevent allergies and even cancer. Adagio offers a wide range of great-tasting rooibos teas.

Penn State scientists have discovered that honey is a powerful cough suppressant—so next time you¹re hacking up a lung, head for the kitchen. When parents of 105 sick children doled out honey or dextromethorphan (the active ingredient in over-the-counter cough medicines like Robitussin), the honey was better at lessening cough frequency and severity. Try a drizzle in a cup of rooibos tea.

The vitamin C in kiwi won¹t prevent the onslaught of a cold, but it might decrease the duration of your symptoms. One kiwifruit provides 117 percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C.

Foods rich in healthy monounsaturated fats help reduce inflammation, a catalyst for migraines. One study found that the anti-inflammatory compounds in olive oil suppress the enzymes involved in inflammation in the same manner as ibuprofen. Avocados and almonds are also high in monounsaturated fats.

Not just any margarine, mind you—those containing plant sterols. In a Tufts University study, people who ate a butter substitute containing plant sterols with three meals each day saw their LDL (bad) cholesterol drop by 6 percent. How? The researchers say that plant sterols prevent cholesterol from being absorbed by the intestine. Promise Active and Smart Balance HeartRight are two great options.

Popeye was onto something, it seems. Rutgers researchers discovered that treating human muscle cells with a compound found in spinach increased protein synthesis by 20 percent. The compound allows muscle tissue to repair itself faster, the researchers say. One thing to keep in mind, however: Spinach doesn’t automatically make any salad a healthy option. Check out 20 Salads Worse Than a Whopper to see what I mean. You’ll be absolutely shocked!

Green Tea
Brazilian scientists found that participants who consumed three cups of the beverage every day for a week had fewer markers of the cell damage caused by resistance to exercise. That means that green tea can help you recover faster after an intense workout.

Low-Fat Chocolate Milk
Nothing like a little dessert after a long workout. British researchers found that low-fat chocolate milk does a better job than sports drinks at replenishing the body after a workout. Why? Because it has more electrolytes and higher fat content. And scientists at James Madison University found that the balance of fat, protein, and carbs in chocolate milk makes it nearly one-third more effective at replenishing muscles than other recovery beverages.

According to research published in Nutrition Journal, fish oil can help increase your ability to concentrate. Credit EPA and DHA, fatty acids that bolster communication among brain cells and help regulate neurotransmitters responsible for mental focus. Salmon, trout, halibut, and tuna are also great sources of EPA and DHA.

The antioxidants in bananas, apples, and oranges may help protect you from Alzheimer’s, report Korean scientists. The researchers discovered that plant chemicals known as polyphenols helped shield brain cells from oxidative stress, a key cause of the disease.

Vitamin B12, an essential nutrient found in meat, milk, and fish, may help protect you against brain loss, say British scientists. The researchers found that older people with the highest blood levels of the vitamin were six times less likely to have brain shrinkage than those with the lowest levels.

Researchers from Harvard found that men who consumed more beta-carotene over 18 years had significantly delayed cognitive aging. Carrots are a tremendous source of the antioxidant, as are other orange foods like butternut squash, pumpkin, and bell peppers.

Ground Flaxseed
Flax is the best source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)—a healthy fat that improves the workings of the cerebral cortex, the area of the brain that processes sensory information, including that of pleasure. To meet your quota, sprinkle 1 tablespoon flaxseed on salads or oatmeal once a day, or mix it into a smoothie or shake.
